I am writing this in the mountains, reflecting on this past year and trying to fathom which part of the cycle we are currently in. This is our third straight year of growth, we’ve moved to a brand new office, invested heavily in technology, convinced some great people to come back and join us, added considerable depth to our bench and we’ll end the year with a staff of more than eighty. We’ll be up 30% in revenue, we’ll have expanded our client base, and we’ll look back on 2013 as very much a success.


While we’ve been fortunate to have had this kind of growth, it’s been challenging for our industry. The environment is cautious, the money is protective, the workload is unpredictable, expectations are high and project delivery is as demanding as ever. Construction costs are up, rents are flattening out and interest rates are getting ready to rise. This is what we now call the “new norm.” It’s better than where we were 3 years ago, but it feels nothing like the “old norm” of six years ago!


Despite the challenges of a new economy, we’ve adjusted pretty well here at TPP. We’re producing some of the best design work in our 18 year history. We’re putting out documents in less time than we used to and our clients are going to GMP quicker than ever to get out of the ground as early as possible in their efforts to beat the competition to the finish line! We’re doing it all as well as we did at the peak of the old cycle, and our clients appreciate it. The phone is once again ringing with referrals.


The key to much of our success and growth comes back, as it always does, to our people. We’ve recruited heavily this year and considerably strengthened our bench with the addition of senior personnel. It’s an expensive route to take, but we’ve always had the best results when we have the most experienced staff on our projects. Its hard work to stay on top of it all, but it’s as rewarding and exciting as ever. As you all know, the workload can be unpredictable, so we expect to step it up in the next few months, do our best to lock up some additional business, and look forward to keeping it going as the New Year rolls around.
